|Title=Good Scientific Practice Guidelines (Österreichische Agentur für wissenschaftliche Integrität (ÖAWI), 2026)
|Is About=The 2026 Guideline on Good Scientific Practice published by the Austrian Agency for Research Integrity (ÖAWI) establishes the principles, standards, and institutional responsibilities that promote integrity in research and teaching in Austria. It applies to all stages of the research process from the initial idea and study design to data management, publication, peer review, supervision, and communication of research findings. The guideline is based on four core principles: reliability, honesty, respect, and responsibility, aligning with the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ALLEA, 2023).

The document defines best practices for conducting research, managing research data, determining authorship, collaborating across institutions, and carrying out fair peer review. It also provides updated guidance on the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing that researchers remain accountable for AI-assisted work and must disclose its use where appropriate. Additionally, the guideline identifies forms of research misconduct, including fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, misuse of AI, ghostwriting, and unethical authorship practices. Finally, it outlines the responsibilities of research institutions to provide training, establish research ethics structures, support research data management, and ensure fair procedures for investigating suspected misconduct.
|Important Because=This guideline is important because it provides a comprehensive framework for ensuring trust, quality, and accountability in scientific research. It establishes clear principles and standards that support responsible research conduct, helping researchers produce reliable, transparent, and ethically sound results while protecting participants, collaborators, and society. The guideline also addresses emerging challenges by providing recommendations for the responsible and transparent use of artificial intelligence in research. Beyond individual researchers, it supports institutions by promoting education, mentoring, research ethics, effective research data management, and fair procedures for addressing allegations of misconduct. Together, these measures foster a culture of integrity, prevent unethical research practices, strengthen institutional responsibility, and enhance public confidence in science by promoting consistent standards of excellence across research and higher education institutions.<div><div></div></div>
|Is About=On 8 June 2026, the CHANGER Project successfully delivered its second online training session as part of the Intensive Course for the Framework Programme ethics appraisal scheme. The session, titled ''Gene Editing in Research'', brought together participants from across the research ethics community to explore recent developments in gene therapy and the challenges these innovations pose for research ethics review.

The interactive training provided participants with a comprehensive overview of gene editing technologies, including the distinction between germline and somatic gene editing, and examined the current legal and regulatory landscape, with a particular focus on the European context. Discussions also addressed key ethical considerations surrounding gene therapy, including questions of equity and fairness, the assessment of risks and benefits, and the complexities of obtaining meaningful informed consent in rapidly evolving areas of biomedical research.

An important part of the session was dedicated to understanding the patient perspective, highlighting the experiences, expectations and concerns of individuals and communities affected by gene therapy developments.

To encourage practical application of the concepts discussed, the training concluded with a case-study exercise. Participants worked in breakout groups to analyse a research protocol involving gene therapy, identify potential ethical issues, and reflect on the role of research ethics committees in evaluating such proposals. The exercise stimulated lively discussion and provided valuable insights into the challenges of reviewing cutting-edge research involving gene editing technologies.

The recording of the training session is now available online, together with the presentations delivered by the speakers:
|Has Related Initiative=Initiative:F4d945c9-461b-44f7-91ba-db70ca6332a1
|Is About=The AIOLIA policy brief “AI Ethics: From Principles to Practice” focuses on bridging the gap between ethical AI principles and their practical implementation in organizations. While frameworks such as the EU AI Act and the Assessment List for Trustworthy AI (ALTAI) define ethical requirements, many organizations struggle to apply these principles consistently during the development and deployment of AI systems. The policy brief argues that ethical AI requires more than compliance with regulations; it must become part of an organization's governance, culture, and decision-making processes.

Based on experiences from ten AI use cases across sectors including healthcare, human resources, security, automotive engineering, elderly care, and AI companions, the AIOLIA project developed practical methods to support responsible AI. These include 175 organizational and technical measures, 12 contextualized ethics principles, and six policy recommendations that help translate abstract ethical concepts into actionable practices. The brief also recommends improving implementation guidance, updating existing assessment tools, expanding regulatory sandboxes for innovation, encouraging collaboration between academia and industry, and investing in research on AI's long-term societal impacts. Overall, it promotes a practical, continuous approach to developing trustworthy and human-centered AI.
|Important Because=This policy brief is important because many organizations struggle to convert ethical AI principles into everyday practice. Regulations such as the EU AI Act specify legal obligations but often lack practical implementation guidance, particularly for smaller organizations with limited resources. AIOLIA provides tested methods, governance processes, and practical measures that help organizations develop trustworthy AI while reducing legal, reputational, and operational risks. The recommendations also encourage collaboration between policymakers, researchers, and industry to create consistent standards and evidence-based governance. This supports responsible AI innovation while protecting human rights, transparency, accountability, and public trust in AI systems.
|Has Related Initiative=Initiative:F4d945c9-461b-44f7-91ba-db70ca6332a1
|Is About=The AIOLIA policy brief “Ethical Challenges of AI Companions” examines the ethical and regulatory issues arising from AI systems that build ongoing, emotionally engaging relationships with users. These AI companions include dedicated chatbot applications and general-purpose AI models that provide emotional support, personal coaching, entertainment, or advice through repeated interactions. Unlike traditional AI tools, AI companions can influence users' emotions, decisions, and behaviors over time, creating risks such as emotional dependency, manipulation, privacy loss, and reduced human autonomy.

The brief argues that current European regulations, particularly the AI Act, focus mainly on transparency by requiring users to be informed that they are interacting with AI. However, this alone is insufficient because users may knowingly interact with AI while still becoming emotionally attached or behaviorally influenced over time. To address these emerging risks, the policy brief recommends four governance measures:

(1) identifying and protecting users whose vulnerability develops during long-term interactions,

(2) implementing longitudinal oversight that monitors patterns across repeated conversations rather than isolated exchanges,

(3) designing AI systems with intentional "friction," such as reflective prompts and breaks to reduce over-engagement, and

(4) moving beyond simple disclosure by providing contextual transparency that helps users understand how AI shapes their interactions and behaviors. These recommendations aim to ensure that AI companions remain beneficial while protecting users' well-being and fundamental rights.
|Important Because=This policy brief is important because AI companions are becoming increasingly integrated into people's daily lives, offering emotional support, advice, and companionship. While these technologies provide significant benefits, they also introduce new ethical challenges that existing regulations do not adequately address. Long-term interactions can lead to emotional dependence, privacy risks, manipulation, and changes in user behavior that develop gradually rather than through isolated incidents. The brief provides practical recommendations for policymakers and AI developers to create safeguards that balance innovation with user protection. Its proposals help ensure that AI companions promote human well-being, preserve autonomy, and maintain trust in AI technologies as their use continues to expand.
