The European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (2023), authored by ALLEA (European Federation of Academies of Sciences and Humanities), provides an international framework that formalises principles of honesty, accountability, professional courtesy, and stewardship of resources. Targeting Europe but aligned with global standards, it strengthens the credibility, reproducibility, and societal trust in research. The Code outlines responsibilities for researchers, institutions, funders, and journals, setting expectations for good practice in planning, conducting, publishing, and reviewing research. Key provisions address authorship, citation, conflict-of-interest management, transparency of data and methods, responsible supervision, and fair peer review. It establishes clear procedures for handling breaches of integrity, ensuring due process, proportional sanctions, and opportunities for learning. Education and training are embedded to make integrity a core competence, alongside guidance on emerging issues such as open science, digital tools, data management, and new dissemination practices. Equity, diversity, and inclusivity are emphasised as essential for safe and respectful research environments. By offering practical tools and aligning local policies with international norms, the Code acts as both a policy benchmark and a handbook, supporting researchers and institutions in safeguarding research quality across Europe.
