What is this about?
As a part of the Open Science movement, this cross-publisher initiative aims to promote open and unrestricted availability of scholarly publications’ abstracts. This particularly refers to journal articles and book chapters. Wider availability of abstracts could result in increasing discoverability and attracting readers to the full text.[1]
Why is this important?
Although many abstracts are available in different bibliographic databases, their use is limited in a number of ways. For example, they require a subscription, they are not machine-accessible, or are restricted to a one specific discipline.[2] The most important benefits of open abstracts are their visibility, and easier use of text mining,[3] especially for researchers in developing countries who perhaps do not have the means for subscription to expensive journals.[4]
The initiative recommends scholarly publishers to make their abstracts more visible and easily accessible by depositing them to Crossref, a non-profit open repository that publishers use to register and share Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for their publications.[2] Through Crossref, research abstracts across disciplines will become easily searchable and machine-readable.[4]For whom is this important?
What are the best practices?
Around 13 000 scholarly publishers, those with both open access and subscription requirement, have already been submitting their bibliographic metadata and references to Crossref.[2] At the launch of I4OA in September 2020, 8.3% of journal articles with a Crossref DOI had their abstracts available in the repository.[2] Publishers such as BMJ, The British Academy, Life Science Alliance, Oxford University Press, SAGE, F1000, MDPI, and many others have already joined I40A or have accepted to join.
