The Declaration of Helsinki was updated last month, and the changes made have BIG implications for #ResearchIntegrity! But what exactly is the declaration, and what exactly has changed? Read on to get the full breakdown… 🧵1/11
Post image
First, some background 📖 The Declaration of Helsinki is an ethical document adopted by the World Medical Association in 1964, which established principles for research involving humans. The declaration was drafted in the aftermath of WWII, during which much unethical research had been conducted 2/11
The initial declaration set out basic principles emphasising the duty researchers have to patients, the importance of informed consent and careful assessment of risks. ⚖ The declaration also states that ethical considerations must take precedence over local laws. 3/11
Since its original adoption, the Declaration has undergone numerous revisions to keep it up-to-date with contemporary issues as a code of ethics. The most recent version, adopted last month at the 75th meeting of the WMA, is the 8th time that the Declaration has been revised! 🔁
So what’s new ❓ Some key changes include: research “subjects” are now “participants”, and principles refer to “researchers” as well as physicians. Consent is now required from participants if their data is to be stored and used in the future, for example in AI datasets. 💾 4/11
One of the BIGGEST changes though is to paragraph 12, in the “general principles” section of the declaration. Previous versions of this paragraph emphasised the need for appropriate education and qualifications for researchers. 🎓 The new revision adds the following: 5/11
“Scientific integrity is essential in the conduct of medical research involving human participants. Involved individuals, teams, and organizations must never engage in research misconduct.” This is the first time that #Integrity and #Misconduct have been explicitly mentioned! 🤯
So what does this mean? Ensuring research integrity is not just the responsibility of individual researchers - institutions must also do their part. As Matthias Wjst told @retractionwatch.com, “Failing to do so could make them part of an organized system of research misconduct.” ❌
In practice, this means that research organizations will have to be more proactive, and take some of the responsibility for navigating the challenges involved in conducting research involving human participants today. 🧭 9/11
And finally an interview with workgroup lead Jack Resneck about the new revisions: youtube.com/watch?v=dFmI...
Thanks for reading! 11/11
