|Is About=One of the main goals of research is to disseminate research results through scientific publications. Therefore, authorship is an important tenet of research as it confers credibility and accountability to the research and the researcher. This document raises awareness on a broad range of issues on authorship including its importance, who is eligible for authorship, poor research practices such as guest and ghost authorship, and the role of research institutions in ensuring good authorship practices.
+
|Is About=Developed through a cross-sector project commissioned by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), UKRIO has published a new suite of resources to support research contributors in adopting and promoting good authorship practice. The toolkit was informed by consultation with stakeholders across the research community and reflects a breadth of disciplinary and sectoral perspectives.
|Important Because=Although it is acknowledged that good authorship practices are crucial for research, wide variations exist in authorship conventions across disciplines and institutions. It is essentials that researchers, especially those undertaking interdisciplinary projects, are aware of these differences in order to avoid authorship disputes at a later stage.

UKRIO's Authorship Integrity Toolkit

What is this about?

Developed through a cross-sector project commissioned by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), UKRIO has published a new suite of resources to support research contributors in adopting and promoting good authorship practice. The toolkit was informed by consultation with stakeholders across the research community and reflects a breadth of disciplinary and sectoral perspectives.

The toolkit includes:

  • Guidance on Good Authorship Practice
  • Model Authorship Dispute Procedure
  • Template Authorship Strategy Agreement

Why is this important?

Authorship is a highly visible and valued aspect of research. It recognises intellectual contribution, signals expertise, and shapes careers, while also strengthening collaboration and clarifying expectations across research teams.

In practice, however, authorship decisions can be complex. Unclear criteria, disciplinary differences, power imbalances, and large collaborations can lead to disputes over contribution, order, or inclusion. If unresolved, such issues can damage relationships and undermine research integrity.

The tools developed through this project provide practical, sector-informed guidance to support good authorship practice, encourage clear communication, and help prevent or resolve disputes.

For whom is this important?
