Professional Ethics and Code of Conduct for National Natural Science Foundation of China
What is this about?
In 2009, the National Natural Science Foundation of China introduced standards of professional ethics and a code of conduct for its members, funders, and governors. It developed these standards to ensure the fair and impartial distribution of resources to research programs. The standards include concrete guidelines on application review, confidentiality, and project management. It also includes guidelines for individual comportment, laying out professional duties and virtues (e.g. self-discipline and honesty) for members.
Why is this important?
As indicated in an interview following the guidelines, these standards are relevant to funding organizations for several reasons. The foundation intended to create a culture of fairness and honesty that preserved the public trust in its findings. It also created the guidelines to create concrete policy for managing an increasing quantity of funds.
