European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)
What is this about?
An international convention that aims to protect the rights and freedom of people across Europe. In the convention, several articles protect basic human rights. Not only it protects basic rights such as the right to life, the right to a fair trial, etc. but it also prevents harmful action by declaring the right to freedom from torture, freedom from slavery, among others.
Why is this important?
47 Member States of the Council of Europe have signed the European Convention on Human Rights. Besides, any violation of the ECHR can be taken to the European Court of Human Rights.
