Researcher Accused of Breaching Research Ethics Faces GMC

What is this about?

This factual case describes an instance in which a researcher is accused of scientific misconduct by the General Medical Council (GMC). The researcher allegedly lied to trial sponsors and other research institutions about having obtained ethical approval and about the existence of other sponsors. In addition, the accused researcher used the titles of professor and Ph.D. without obtaining a doctorate.

Why is this important?

Ethical approval for scientific research is extremely important. Otherwise, the health of research participants may be harmed. Similarly, performing biomedical research without being properly trained to do so may have serious consequences for both the health of research participants as well as the quality of the research. Therefore, lying about such approval and one’s credentials are serious offences and should be punished severely.
