The University of Oslo's Ethical guidelines for supervision relationships

What is this about?

The guidance provided by supervisors to students (Bachelor's, Master's and PhD students) is of great importance. At the same time, these relationships are inherently asymmetrical and therefore could be prone to exploitation. The University of Oslo, through this guideline, provides standards of good conduct for both students and supervisors.

Why is this important?

Students and supervisors have important obligations to each other. For instance, both should contribute towards maintaining open communication and meeting regularly, and ensure that confidential information is not disclosed. Supervisors, being in a position of greater responsibility, should also ensure that they are impartial, refrain from close personal contact and guide students who face personal challenges.

In case of difficult relationships, this web page also provides details of ombudspersons.
