|Title=VIRT2UE Training Guide
|Guide Goal=The VIRT2UE Train the Trainer program addresses researchers and educators from different disciplines who want to become trainers in Research Integrity. By taking this blended learning training, participants have the chance to 1) learn about the main Research Integrity issues, 2) reflect on them within the context of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ECoC) and 3) develop skills to foster understanding and internalization of the principles and practices of good science as promoted by the ECoC'''. '''The training takes a virtue-based approach and supports participants in reflecting on their understanding of, and own positions towards Research Integrity. In line with this, a strong focus is put on fostering reflecting on personal cases and experiences with the intention of building strong connections between theory and practice.

Learning objectives for the train-the-trainer course are to:

'''<br />In detail'''<br />
+
* Identify and apply the core principles and recommended good practices of the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity
 +
* Understand core virtue ethics concepts and terms and relate virtue ethics to research integrity
 +
* Facilitate case-based and experiential exercises aimed at fostering reflection on virtues
 +
* Critically reflect on experiences of teaching
 +
* Adapt teaching approaches based on the target group characteristics

*<blockquote>Blended learning</blockquote>

<blockquote>The VIRT²UE train-the-trainer program combines online and face-to-face components. Online materials are designed for individual learning and reflection and provide an introduction to the main research issues and philosophical concepts in research integrity. The face-to-face training develops participants’ teaching skills and provides opportunities for interactive, reflective and case-based group activities. The online and face-to-face courses are complementary. Online preparation is required for the face-to-face exercises, and the online exercises need to be supported by experiences provided in the face-to-face meetings.</blockquote>

#Develop a predisposition to cultivate virtues, and know how to act upon those virtues in concrete situations and complex moral dilemmas.
+
Click [https://embassy.science/wiki/Training_Informations here] to learn more about the training, read the [https://embassy.science/wiki/Training_Informations#VIRT2UE-FAQs FAQs] or read an overview article on the program - https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/17470161231161267.
#Relate the principles outlined in the ECoC to a concrete ERI case.

#Develop knowledge and skills to apply exercises that help researchers to cultivate scientific virtues while reflecting on concrete cases and dilemmas.

#Develop didactical competences necessary to organize and implement a VIRT2UE training.

*Adaptability

The training materials represent a toolbox from which trainers can build their own courses tailored to the needs of their trainees. Trainers are encouraged to adapt materials in order to make them more suitable for the context in which they will offer their training. This supports contextualised teaching across different countries and disciplines and promotes the internalisation of the practices and principles of the ECoC.

<br />

*Certificate

Program participants receive a certificate when they have completed the online and face-to-face courses and trained ten further researchers. The training of ten further researchers can be completed during or after the duration of the program.

This training has been developed by the VIRT2UE project, which has received funding form the European Union’s H2020 research programme under grant agreement N 741782.

Start with the online course

Instruction
This series of eLearning modules provides an introduction to the main principles of research integrity, describes the guidance outlined in the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity (ECoC), and asks you to apply the ECoC to your own context.
1 hour(s)
eLearning
Instruction
This series of eLearning modules provides an introduction to virtue ethics, and highlights the relevance of virtue ethics for research integrity. Learners are invited to self-assess newly gained knowledge, relate and apply the concepts in reflexive exercises, or reflect on the relevance of these concepts for their daily research practice by drawing upon their prior experience.
1 hour(s)
eLearning
Instruction
This series of eLearning modules fosters reflection on the current research culture and conditions that undermine values inherent in the scientific endeavour and make it more likely that researchers develop some vices.
1 hour(s)
eLearning
Instruction
This series of eLearning modules highlights the relevance of supervision, mentoring, and role-modeling in research environments and provides definitions of roles and their corresponding responsibilities.

The exercises

Instruction
This exercise helps participants to identify the features of, and differences between, debate and dialogue. Participants become aware of the strengths of dialogue as a tool for reflection processes.
1 hour(s)
20
Face to Face, Participatory sessions
Instruction
This exercise helps participants to develop approaches for implementing virtues in real life dilemmas by relating virtues to norms of action. Participants reflect on a real research integrity dilemma from different perspectives by means of dialogue.
1 hour(s)
20
Face to Face, Participatory sessions
Instruction
Can you be too honest? This exercise helps to develop moral sensitivity with respect to basic virtues related to research integrity. In particular, it fosters reflection on the inherent moral ambiguity of specific virtues and how this ambiguity looks like in real-life research practice.
2 hour(s)
20
Face to Face, Participatory sessions
Instruction
This exercise supports participants in identifying research integrity principles, virtues and questionable research practices in a hypothetical case. It provides a framework to consider, choose and defend alternative courses of action regarding realistic research integrity dilemmas.
2 hour(s)
20
Face to Face, Participatory sessions
Instruction
This exercise fosters reflection on the concept of goodness and how it applies in the context of research.
